It´s a long time since I first got really annoyed by all the spam that I received at my discussion forums. At first I just deleted them, then when more and more spam came along, I had to delete spam several times a day. It didn´t take much time, but I didn´t like it at all. The reason was that the spam was in mostly related to porn and sex sites, some were related to drugs. The language they used in their posts was something I didn´t want to read, and I am sure most of the people who visited my discussion forums got a little surprised by reading just the headlines.

Finally I have done something to stop this, well, I am not sure if it will actually stop it, but hopefully I will get a little more control over the forums by adding a little modification to the phpBB installation.

What I did was that I added Textual confirmation when people sign up for the forums. This is a modification where I get to ask the questions and write the answers. People signing up actually have to type the answers (in plain text). For instance, if I ask “are you a human?” you would have to answer “yes”.

There are probably many other things that I can do to prevent spam, but hopefully this one will be it for now.
